MODERN INTERIORS IN TÜRKİYE SYMPOSIUM IV
June 8-9, 2026
Bahçeşehir University, Faculty of Architecture and Design, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design
The modern interior presents a multi-dimensional and multidisciplinary problem area for a better understanding of the social, cultural, artistic, aesthetic, and ideological aspects of the modern movement in Türkiye. This field manifests itself through modernist discourses and representations, sometimes within the physical boundaries of the interior and at other times in urban, regional, and global contexts that transcend these boundaries. Interior design is a significant practice that enables the experience and comprehension of modern spatiality, ideology, and aesthetics. Therefore, the examination, discussion, and dissemination of design elements and interior components characterized as "modern" play a vital role in expanding and deepening these discourses and representations.
Appreciating, understanding, and preserving the value of the modern interior can only be achieved through in-depth research and comprehensive discussions. In this context, it is essential to discuss concepts such as modernity, privacy, efficiency, economy, comfort, and beauty within daily life and consumption. To reveal the experience of modernity in the interior, and to encourage its preservation and its reflection in contemporary designs through interpretation, it is necessary to address multidisciplinary research and diverse research methods.
As in the rest of the world, there are numerous cases in Türkiye that demonstrate how the modern movement has shaped public and private interiors, awaiting in-depth investigation. Undoubtedly, every contemporary study in this field that sheds light on our recent history will allow us to further decode the modernist discourse and movement, while enriching our cultural memory and passing it on to future generations. Simultaneously, interiors, combined with artistic contributions, offer extraordinary resources for understanding the cultural state of a period and the spirit of an age (zeitgeist).
The Symposium on Modern Interiors in Türkiye IV, organized by the docomomo_tr Interior Committee and hosted by the Bahçeşehir University Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design in June 2026, aims to create an interdisciplinary platform for current research on modern interiors in Türkiye. There are two participation options for the symposium: paper presentation and poster presentation.
There is no registration fee for the symposium.
